Amazon Announces 16,000 Job Cuts Amid AI-Driven Cloud Strategy

Amazon is navigating a dual-track strategy marked by workforce reductions and an aggressive push into artificial intelligence, as it seeks to significantly scale its cloud business. The company has confirmed layoffs of around 16,000 employees as part of an ongoing effort to simplify organisational structures and streamline decision-making.

According to internal communication, the move is aimed at reducing management layers, increasing team ownership and eliminating processes that slow execution. The communication stated that such changes are difficult but have been made after careful consideration to position the organisation and its cloud arm for long-term success.

The layoffs are linked to an internal restructuring initiative referred to as Project Dawn, with reports indicating that news of the cuts first surfaced through a draft email that was inadvertently shared with employees before an official announcement.

The company, which employs around 1.5 million people globally, acknowledged that the restructuring has created uncertainty among staff, with limited internal openings available for reassignment.
